Finally harvesting Maui onions

Looking leekish, my Maui onions have finally grown up and are ready for harvest. I think I planted them a bit too close but I didn't think they would grow this big.
This photo below shows them in May.


The shot below is one taken in March, newly planted.

    So pleased to find someone in California trying to grow Maui onions. We are going to attempt growing these, but we've been told it isn't easy. Any tips? How did yours taste?
    And, where/whom did you buy your seeds from?

    The Maui onions were seedlings bought from Hay Garden Works who sells at the Santa Monica Farmer's markets on Wed and Saturday. They were yummy. This was my first year of success, after three years of trying.
    Mulching really helped this year.
