O'Neal blueberries in the early morning drizzle

The O'Neal blueberries are my favorite variety. Berries from the store don't even come close. Large, plump, and oh so sweet, they never get home. I eat them right from the bush.

Blueberry leaf in the morning drizzle

I'm a fan of morning drizzles, especially when the rain beads up in intricate patterns. Posted by Picasa

O'Neal blueberries

It's the O'Neals' that I love the best. The berries blow up as they ripen, reminding me of Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Dahl must have grown blueberries in his garden, I'll have to check. I also have Misty and something else but in my garden, when it comes to beauty and taste, the O'Neal is a standout.

O'Neal blueberries

So far, of the three blueberry bushes I have, I've found the O'Neal blueberries to be the sweetest. This year, I plan to cover them with netting: the birds are noticed them, finally. I keep my blueberries in pots so that I can better control the soil as they prefer a more acidic pH.

Family Ericaceae, Vaccinicum x 'O'Neal'
